FAQ
How much does a plumber cost in Barrhaven?
As indicative 2026 ranges: a service call during business hours is commonly $120 to $220 for the first hour, an after-hours emergency callout $200 to $400 before any work, a local drain blockage cleared $200 to $450, a main line augered $350 to $700, and a conventional gas water heater supplied and installed $1,800 to $3,200. Ask whether the callout charge is credited against the repair, because good firms credit it and it is a fair question to put on the phone.
Does a plumber in Ontario need a licence?
Yes, and it is one of the few trades in this list where that is true. Plumber is a compulsory trade in Ontario, trade code 306A, and to practise it legally a person must hold a Registered Training Agreement, a Provisional Certificate of Qualification or a Certificate of Qualification. The apprenticeship runs 9,000 hours, of which 8,280 are on the job and 720 in school, and a Certificate of Qualification has to be renewed to stay valid. Holders appear on the Skilled Trades Ontario public register, so ask for the name and check it (Skilled Trades Ontario, Plumber, trade code 306A).
Who pays when a water pipe freezes in Barrhaven?
It depends which side of the property line the freeze is on. The City is responsible from the stand post or property line out to the water main, and the homeowner from the property line in to the basement or water meter (City of Ottawa, Cold weather, warm pipes). Where thawing has to be done on private property the City charges the cost of work plus 15 per cent, and properties on private streets get no inspection or thawing service. Call 3-1-1 first if you have lost water entirely, so the City can establish which side it is on (City of Ottawa, Frozen water service pipes).
What does the City of Ottawa pay toward a backwater valve?
The City announced $1,000 for interior backwater valves, $2,500 for an exterior storm backwater valve, $1,500 for a sump pump in an existing pit and $3,000 for a sump pump in a new pit, plus 100 per cent of the building permit fee for protective plumbing work (City of Ottawa, Residential Protective Plumbing Program announcement). Eligibility conditions apply. We could not verify them today because the City's programme page blocks automated reading, so confirm the current rules and any deadline with the City before you start, and apply before the work rather than after.
Do I need a permit for plumbing work in Ottawa?
For alterations, additions or extensions to a plumbing system, yes. The City's stated exception is replacing existing fixtures, and it separately lists replacing kitchen or bathroom cabinets as exempt provided plumbing fixtures remain in the same location (City of Ottawa, Do I need a building permit). So a new toilet in the same place generally does not need a permit, and moving that toilet, adding a basement bathroom or fitting a backwater valve does. The current code is the 2024 Building Code, O. Reg. 163/24 (Ontario Building Code, O. Reg. 163/24).
How do I find my main water shut-off valve?
In a Barrhaven or Riverside South house it is almost always in the basement mechanical room, on the incoming line beside or just upstream of the water meter, usually on the wall facing the street. In an older Nepean bungalow it may be in a crawl space or a utility cupboard. The City's own winter advice includes locating it and making sure it is operational, and finding it in October is considerably easier than finding it in February with water coming through a ceiling (City of Ottawa, Cold weather, warm pipes).
Describe the problem, say whether water is still running and roughly when the house was built to request a local plumbing referral. Confirm scope and availability with the provider.
